He was predeceased by: his parents, John Pendelton Sr. and Billie Merle Steel (Hester); and his brother Charlie. He is survived by: his wife Cynthia Dianne McGregor; his sons, Scott Steel (Dayna) of Oskaloosa, Steve Steel (Michelle) of Fairbanks, AK and Dan Steel of Cripple Creek, CO; his grandchildren, Nic Steel (Kilie) of Seattle, WA, Cassi Fitzpatrick (Trevor) of Oskaloosa, Taylor Steel (Abbi) of Pella, Karli Steel of Fairbanks, AK, Kami Steel of Fairbanks, AK, Enoch Steel of Cripple Creek, CO and Truett Steel of Cripple Creek, CO; and his great grandchildren, Rory, Ollie, Ember, Theo, Tully, Leo and Elli.
