He was predeceased by: his parents, Franklin Schafer and Gladys Schafer (Graves); his daughter-in-law Peggy Schafer; his brothers, Bob Schafer and Rex Schafer; and his brothers-in-law, Clayton Patterson and Gary McGuire.
He is survived by: his former spouse Gerri Beninger; his wife Charolette Louise Mikesell (McGuire); his children, Mike Schafer of Marion, Steve Schafer (Joyce) of Arvada, Gregg Schafer (Teresa) of Swisher, Suzi Wojciechowski of Cedar Rapids, Heidi Nobles (Todd) of West Branch and Jeff Mikesell of Boulder City, Nevada; his grandchildren, Melissa, Sarah, Larissa, Leah, Justin, Clint, Tiara, Haley, Madison, DaVon and DaShon; his sister Myrle Paterson of Swisher; and his siblings-in-law, Larry McGuire of Cedar Rapids and Jan McGuire of Fairfax. He is also survived by several great grandchildren.
