He was predeceased by: his brothers, Jim Shay, Lee Shay and Ronnie Joe Shay; his parents-in-law, Orval Soper and Merial Soper; and his siblings-in-law, Marian Kelly, Connie Webb, Betty Holley and Ronald Soper.
He is survived by: his wife Shirley Shay of Oelwein; his children, Morey Shay of Oelwein, Terry Shay (Ellen) of Waterloo and Debbie Shirkey (John) of Oelwein; his grandchildren, Gene Shay, Amy Lewey (Nick) and Dustin Shay (Beth Miller); his great grandchildren, Braydon Ellis, Keagyn Shay, Hannah Shay, Ethan Lewey, Marcy Lewey and John Shay; his siblings, Karen Reynolds (Kyle) of Cedar Rapids and Larry Shay (Marge) of Cedar Rapids; and his siblings-in-law, Jerry Soper, Don Soper, Larry Soper, Joan Waitman, Patti Schmitz and Susan Ohrt. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed in his name to the Ross Reid American Legion Post #9 of Oelwein.
