He was predeceased by: his parents, Elmer W. Bartels and Hazel E. Bartels (Larson); his former wife Janet Irene Peeper; and his brother Leonard. He is survived by: his wife Sonja Bartels (Steere) of Oelwein; his children, Robin Bartels of Burlington, Jeff Bartels (Yvonne McKune) of Cedar Rapids, Terry Bartels (Dorene) of Peoria and Linneau Geisler (Don) of Wichita, Kansas; his stepchildren, John Gosse (Heidi) of Independence, David Gosse (Jenny) of Bettendorf, Deanne Fletcher of Oelwein and Kim Burgin (Brad) of Oelwein; his grandchildren, David, Jeffrey, Carol Ann, Megan, Luke and Paul; his great grandchildren, Maddy, Penny, Felicity, Aribella, Ellie, Sebastian, Nicholas and Teddy; his stepgrandchildren, Brittany, Brianne, Nicole, Rachel and John; his stepgreat-grandchildren, Emma, Braylyn, Everett, Emmett, Vini, Lincoln, Millie and Crosby; and his brother Merlin Bartels (Barbara) of Grand Junction. He is also survived by Nieces & Nephews.
Visitation was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 at 10:00 AM at the River's Edge Christian Church (1247 Cedar Bend St, Waterloo, IA 50703). A funeral service was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 at 11:00 AM at the same location. A burial was held on Tuesday, February 18th 2025 at 2:30 PM at the Woodlawn Cemetery (1301 W Charles St, Oelwein, IA 50662).
A Memorial Fund has been established in his name.
