He was predeceased by: his parents, Mark Benest and Pamela Chase; his brother Willie; and his stepmother Marlene Benest. He is survived by: his wife Jessilyn Benest; his children, Finn Michael, Lucille Caroline and Sally Rose; his brother Scott Benest of Marion, IA; his stepsiblings, Sue Kirk (Steve) and Dave Mulneaux (Carla); his parents-in-law, Michael and Sara Heckart of Coralville, IA; his brothers-in-law, Drew Heckart (Elizabeth) of Cedar Rapids, IA and Jay Heckart (Kelly) of Coralville, IA; and his niece Cecilia Jane.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be directed to his family to be put in an educational fund for his children.
