He was predeceased by: his parents, Ira Mason and Salina Maude Scarbrough (Thomason); his wife Gloria Jean; his siblings, Floyd, Rex, Joye McCauley and Nina Matthews; his siblings-in-law, Clare McCauley, Frank Matthews, Sam J. Williams, Gary Williams and Carole Ann Anderson; and his nephews, John Scarbrough, David Scarbrough and Chuck McCauley.

He is survived by: his son Richard Jr. (Freda) of Tampa, FL.; his grandson Eric (Julie); his great grandchildren, Colin and Logan; and his sisters-in-law, Betty Hartwell of Chico, CA and Marcia Cole Huntington (Marc).

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 4th 2025 from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at the First United Methodist Church (210 N 2nd Ave E, Newton, IA 50208). A celebration of life will be held on Tuesday, March 4th 2025 at 11:30 AM at the same location.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, Jasper County Concert Association, Jasper County Museum, Newton Community Theater or donor's choice.
