He was predeceased by: his parents, Ira Mason and Salina Maude Scarbrough (Thomason); his wife Gloria Jean; his siblings, Floyd, Rex, Joye McCauley and Nina Matthews; his siblings-in-law, Clare McCauley, Frank Matthews, Ruby Scarbrough, Geri Scarbrough, Sam J. Williams, Gary Williams and Carole Ann Anderson; and his nephews, John Scarbrough, David Scarbrough and Chuck McCauley.

He is survived by: his son Richard Jr. (Freda) of Tampa, FL.; his grandson Eric (Julie); his great grandchildren, Colin and Logan; and his sisters-in-law, Betty Hartwell of Chico, CA and Marcia Cole Huntington (Marc).

In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to The First United Methodist Church Organ Fund, Jasper County Concert Association, Jasper County Museum, Newton Community Theater or donor's choice.
