She was predeceased by: her parents, Joseph J. Gorgas and Edna Ruth Gorgas (Woodyard); her sister Bebe Meisner (Larry); and her sister-in-law Glenda Gill. She is survived by: her husband Edwin Smith of Newton; her children, Craig Smith (Bev) of Newton and Deb Bormann (Norm) of Urbandale; her grandsons, Nathan Smith (Ashley) of Newton, Ben Smith of Newton, Joseph Bormann of Johnston and Clayton Bormann (Hailey) of Urbandale; her great grandchildren, Abby, Mason Smith, Layla and Tate Bormann; and her pets, Kitty and Tommy.
Joann strongly believed in helping others in any way she could, whether by supporting a charity, rescuing an animal, or by helping someone she saw who was in need—whether she knew them or not.
