He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred Rethmeier and Rosa Rethmeier (Tinnermeier); and his son Mike Rethmeier. He is survived by: his wife Joyce Rethmeier; his children, Ron Rethmeier (Jeannie) of Laurel, Jill Watson (Redd) of Fairfield, Tim Rethmeier (Gayle) of Winterset and Carma Rethmeier of Winfield, Kansas; and his sister Verna Rethmeier. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren.
