He was predeceased by: his father Walter Ovel; his brother Randy; and his parents-in-law, Felton and Elaine Cleveland. He is survived by: his mother Pauline Ovel (Theis) of New Hampton; his wife Kim Ovel of New Hampton; his children, Jonathan Ovel (Emily) of Waterloo, IA, Elowyn and Kaylee Ovel (Tyler Sharp) of Cedar Falls, IA; his siblings, Nancy Van Wyk (Stan) of Marshalltown, IA, Kevin Ovel (Mary Beth) of New Hampton and Jeff Ovel (Darce) of Decorah, IA; and his siblings-in-law, Mike Cleveland (Susan) of Magnolia, TX and Janet Ovel Hayes. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
