He was predeceased by: his parents, Raymond Schmelzer and Norma Schmoldt Schmelzer Rutka; his stepfather George Rutka; his sons, Gary W. Schmelzer and Wesley P. Schmelzer; his granddaughter Melanie J. Eagle; and his great grandchild Laraine Ash.
He is survived by: his wife Barbara; his children, James J. Schmelzer (Dawn) of Porum, Kurt Schmelzer (Cindy) of Corning, Eric Schmelzer (Peggy) of Illinois City, Anna Schmelzer of Muscatine, Cynthia Eagle (Bob) of Muscatine, Vicki Carter (Ken) of Wapello and Jeana Howland (Jamie) of Muscatine; his daughter-in-law RayAnn Schmelzer of Ohio; and his siblings, Tibe Vander Linden (Doug) and Richard Schmelzer of Muscatine. He is also survived by 27 grandchildren; 47 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
