He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Hargrave and Evva Hargrave (Nicewanner); his son Matthew Hargrave; and his siblings, Grace Dahnke, Irene Livingston, Chris Buell, Joyce Hargrave and Robert Hargrave.

He is survived by: his wife Lisa Newton of Muscatine; his children, Mark Hargrave (Jenny Wagg) of Grandview, Therisa Moore of Muscatine and Tracy Hargrave of Muscatine; his grandchildren, Brandon, Cameron Moore, Abigail, Kaydence Hargrave and Jackson Lindquist; his siblings, Jim Hargrave (Verla) of Fruitland, Dorothy Williams (Dewey) of Muscatine, Joanne Latimer (Wayne) of Murfreesboro and Keith Hargrave of Muscatine; and his pet Mason. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established in Denny's name.

“I was very saddened to hear the news of my co-worker and friend's passing. So many memories of funny stuff in that paint booth down at Oak Steel. Whenever I happened to be in the building after my 25 years were done there, I always stopped by and said hi, or something to get a chuckle out of him. He could also always get a laugh out of me although I won't say how here. Some good times at Pete's too. My condolences to you Lisa. RIP Denny Dog. Regards, Bob Beeding”
