He was predeceased by: his parents, Cecil R. Schaapveld and Dolores M. Fabrizius Schaapveld; and his siblings, Larry Schaapveld and Barbara Schaapveld. He is survived by: his wife Jane Schaapveld of Muscatine; his children, Sarah Evans (Jake) of Muscatine and Robert 'Bob Schaapveld (Destany) of Muscatine; his grandchildren, Stella Bender, Jackson Evans, Briar Evans and Evie Evans; and his siblings, Robert Schaapveld (Judy), James 'Jim Schaapveld (Susan), Maureen Mahoney (Bruce Meyer), Janet Hamann (Ed) and Joann Nelson (Joe Mueller). He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
