He was predeceased by: his parents, Gunnar Hjortshoj and Nevva Hjortshoj (Odem); his son Shawn; his sister Carol; his brother-in-law Larry Diekema; and his mother-in-law Darlene Karr.

He is survived by: his wife Sharon Karr; his sons, Chad Hjortshoj and Matt Hjortshoj; his grandchildren, Stephanie Peterson (Jeremy), Andrew Hjortshoj (Marthe) and Eden Hjortshoj; his great grandchild Charlotte Peterson; his brothers, Paul Hjortshoj (June) and Darrell Hjortshoj (Karlin); his sisters-in-law, Susan Swift (Tracy) and Jen Baker; and his father-in-law Bill Karr.

Memorials may be directed to the PCM Food Pantry, St. Jude Hospital or the Iowa Heart Association.
