He was predeceased by: his parents, Robert James and Karen Jeanne McLaughlin (House); and his niece Kayla Atkins. He is survived by: his wife Kim McLaughlin of Mediapolis; his daughters, Jordan Ibbotson (John) of Mt. Union and Kassidy McLaughlin (Josh Knipfer) of Winfield; his grandson John Lewis Ibbotson; his stepchildren, Jesse Wagler of Burlington and Sara Robinson (Denny) of Burlington; his stepgrandsons, Randy Wagler, Brayten Wagler and Kyle Parker; and his siblings, Cynthia Willis (Craig) of Clear Lake, Dana Atkins (Doug) of Burlington, Joan Gray (Steve) of Burlington, Greg McLaughlin of Mediapolis and Daniel Boone McLauglin (Jackie) of Mediapolis. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial has been established for the Southeast Iowa Regional Hospice House.
