He was predeceased by: his parents, George Butterfield and Ruth Butterfield (Eastman); his wife Dorothy Rae Espe; his children, Anne Marie and Randy Butterfield; and his siblings, Paul, Florence, Bonnie, Beada and Darlene.

He is survived by: his children, Mark Butterfield (Arnella) of Elma, IA, Becky Johnson (Mark) of Osage, IA, Penny Heimer (Mark) of Stacyville, IA and Wade Butterfield of Mason City, IA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren; and 16 great grandchildren.
