He was predeceased by: his parents, Carl Shafer and Pearl Shafer (Cox); and his siblings, Leila Atkinson (Walter), Ray Shafer (Wilma) and Frank Shafer.
He is survived by: his wife Dixie; his daughters, Sherry of Mason City, Peggy Davis (Larry) and Glenys Shafer of Mason City; his brothers, George, Joe and David Shafer (Alma); his sister-in-law Janice Shafer (Frank); his uncle Clifton Cox (Charlene); his grandchildren, Jim Barkema, Jason Weitzel, Michael Weitzel and Aftin Waite (Weitzel); his great grandchildren, Takota Weitzel, Drake Waite, Kavaya Weitzel, Alec Barkema, Madison and Ian Weitzel Keaton Weitzel; and his great great grandchild Kasen Kettwig. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
