He was predeceased by: his parents, Bernard Schmidt and Irene Schmidt (Mayland); and his sister Vivian Schmidt. He is survived by: his siblings, Dennis Schmidt of Forest City and Brenda Colson (Roger) of Rockwell; and his nieces and nephews, Amy Colson (Patrick), Jesse Colson (Amy), Mark Johnson, Justin Johnson (Rachel) and Lisa Jutte (Brooke Meowering).

Visitation was held on Saturday, August 31st 2024 from 10:30 AM to 12:00 PM at the Fullerton Funeral Home (123 2nd St SE, Mason City, IA 50401).
