He was predeceased by: his parents, Julian Peter and Frances Maude Johnsen (Zoffka); and his son Jerry Paul. He is survived by: his children, Harlan Gerald Jr. (Faith Myer) of Laurens, IA and Diana Frances of Boulder, CO; his wife Flordeliza Johnsen; and his children, Julian Johnsen (MacKenzie) of Laurens, IA, Jorge Johnsen of Prague and Janet Selzer (Price) of Jenks, OK..

In recent years, he became active in missionary work in the Philippines through his family's foundation, Reach for the Stars.
