He was predeceased by: his parents, Fred W. Smidt and Minnie Smidt (Krenzien); his sisters, Clara Freese (Harvey), Della Buse (Laverne), Matilda Beckman (Hank) and Velma Ulven (Bennett); and his brothers-in-law, Vernice Karstens, Irvin Smidt (Wilma) and Carl Smidt (Mildred).
He is survived by: his wife Annabel Smidt of Lake View, IA; his children, Darla J. Smidt of Waukee, IA and Neal H. Smidt of Lake View, IA; his grandson Prescott Smidt of Mesa, AZ; his sister LaVon Karstens of Lake View, IA; and his brother-in-law Bill (Linda Eichhorn). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family.
