He was predeceased by: his parents, John Courtney and Erma Courtney (Metz); his wife Esther Hugen; and his siblings, Paula, Vivian, Darlene, John and Bob.

He is survived by: his children, Ray Courtney (Bev) of Adel, Connie Wood of Bussey, Deb Swope (Rick) of Sigourney and Steve Courtney (Bonnie) of Bussey; and his grandchildren, Tyler Courtney (Carrie), Lindsay Taylor (Mike), Heather Smith, Rod Smith, Shawn Swope (Amy), Staci Arduser (Kyle), Riki Breitsprecher, Mike Courtney, Evan Courtney (Shelby) and Whitney Harris (Doug). He is also survived by 29 great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Swede's name may be directed to Twin Cedars Dollars for Scholars or Twin Cedars Athletic Department.
