He was predeceased by: his parents, Walter Pettyjohn and Elsie Pettyjohn (Barnhill); his wife Barbara Pettyjohn; and his son Thomas "Toot" Smith. He is survived by: his daughters, Angela, Teresa Smith of Des Moines, Noreen Yarbrough (Dave) of Malcolm, Angie Pettyjohn (John) of Ottumwa and Shari Beaty of Knoxville; and his sister Verna Means (Donald) of Milan, Illinois..
