He was predeceased by: his parents, Charley Nichols and Clara Nichols (Kingery); his brothers, Bob Nichols of Columbia and George Nichols of Winterset; his sisters-in-law, Linda Reed of Chariton and Leta Nichols of Columbia; and his son-in-law Cole Irving of Columbia.

He is survived by: his wife Carolyn Garrett; his children, Julie Ann Rees (Ron) of Knoxville and Dennis Jay Nichols (SuIm) of Columbus, Georgia; his grandsons, Chad Irving of Knoxville, Luke Irving of Knoxville and Joshua Nichols of Columbus, Georgia; his great grandchildren, Carson, Natalie and Carter Irving; his sister Phyllis Willetts (Ben) of Knoxville; and his parents-in-law, Jim Garrett (JoAnn), Eldon Reed of Chariton, Joanne Sellers (Dean) of Ankeny and Joanne Nichols of Winterset. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are requested to the Columbia United Methodist Church in Columbia, Iowa.
