He was predeceased by: his parents, Wilber McDonald and Mary McDonald (Pemberton); his brother Dwight McDonald; his niece Jessica McDonald; and his nephew Troy McDonald.

He is survived by: his wife Joyce McDonald of Kanawha; his daughter Jennifer Ellis (Greg) of Polk City; his grandchildren, Seth and Ciara Perry; his daughter Amy Yockey (Chris) of Holstein; his grandchildren, Nathan and Hannah (Evan); his daughter Iryna Johnson (Cody) of Forest City; his grandchildren, Sasha and Evonna; his brothers, Willard McDonald (Terri) and Duane McDonald (Vickie); his sister-in-law Cindy McDonald; and his half-sister Irma Haywood. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews.

In Lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the family and shared with some of Joe's favorite charities.
