He was predeceased by: his parents, John H. Hunter and Bertha B. Hunter (VanLaningham); his wife Margaret E. Coons; his children, Leonard Jr. (Butch), Gary, Greg and Sandra Lappe; his granddaughters, Lisa Hunter and Brenda Main; his siblings, Alfred Cunningham, Lucile Connell and Winifred Bateman; and his son-in-law Kenneth Monahan.
He is survived by: his children, Sharon Main (Wilbur) of Independence, IA, Judy Ball of Ryan, IA, Pamela Monahan, Becky Norris (Bob) of Queen Creek, AZ. and Michael Hunter (Diane) of Queen Creek, AZ.; his sister Leota Reed; his children-in-law, Colleen Hunter (Butch), Penny Donnelly (Gary) and James Lappe Sr. (Sandra); and his friends, Bill, Lynn Isham, Pete and Liola Ciesielski. He is also survived by Twenty-five grandchildren, Fifty-six great-grandchildren, Thirty-seven great- great-grandchildren, Sixteen step-grandchildren, Eleven step great-great-grandchildren.
Leonard along with his son Greg were both inducted into the Independence Motor Speedway Hall Of Fame in 2018, recognizing their contributions to the sport.
