He was predeceased by: his parents, Donald Gates and Ruth Bellinger Gates; and his siblings-in-law, Richard Sides, Clarence Laube, Betty Laube and Judy Gates.

He is survived by: his wife Lavola Jane Fick; his children, Dawn Brinker (Boyd) and Daniel Gates (Connie) of Hudson; his grandchildren, Brooke Brinker Haverkamp, Brody Brinker and Braydon Brinker; his stepgrandchildren, Allison Lyon (Zac) and Alexis Taplin; his siblings, Patricia Bienfang of Anoka, MN and Gary Gates; and his siblings-in-law, Rev. Calvin Fick (Donna) and Sally Sides. He is also survived by several nieces and nephews.
