He was predeceased by: his parents, Thomas Hayes and Michiko Hayes (Mathushita); his father-in-law Chasper Vander Ploeg; and his sister-in-law Terry Randazzo. He is survived by: his wife Charlene Vander Ploeg of Hospers; his children, Jeremy Hayes (Cheryl Kolus) of Fort Collins and Amber Hayes of Hospers; his brother Greg (Michelle Hayes) of California; his mother-in-law Lucia Vander Ploeg of Sanborn; his brother-in-law Frank Randazzo of Metairie, Louisiana; and also, Pat (John Stewart), Irene (Bruce Kallis), Kathy (Dan Patterson), Rachel Kvigne of Rock Valley, Ginny (Greg Bradley), Will (Diane Vander Ploeg) and John (Rachel Vander Ploeg). He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

Memorials will be given to Love INC in Sheldon and Justice For All in Rock Valley.
