He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Raymond and Charlotte Mathis; and his grandparents-in-law, Harris, Evelyn Wild, Wilmer, Norma Monserud and Della Fish.

He is survived by: his mother Karen Mathis (Caballero) of Lansing, IA; his wife Brooke Mathis; his children, Wava and Weller of Harpers Ferry; his sister Mara Mathis (Casey Bode); his parents-in-law, Randy and Louise Wild of Lansing; his grandparents, Rupert and Martha Caballero of Waukon, IA; his siblings-in-law, Laurie Wild (Dustin) of Fennimore, WI, Doug Wild (Robyn) of Lansing and Nick Wild (Jess) of Waterville, IA; and his nieces and nephews, Rhealee, Charli, Ariana, Henry, Cordell, Alex and Ezra.

In lieu of flowers, memorials will be used to set up a scholarship in Mackay's name.
