He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Merz and Margaret Merz (Sondag); his brothers-in-law, Floyd Hammes, Jerome Besser, Robert Hammes and Ray Pergeau; and his nephews, Timothy and Jeffrey Shannon.

He is survived by: his wife Sue of Harper; his children, Gregory Merz (Charlene) of Minneapolis, Chris Merz of Waterloo, Brooke Schmidt of Des Moines and Cathrine Schmidt of Minneapolis, Minnesota; his grandchildren, Travis Bloomquist of Minneapolis, Molly Merz (Jennifer) of Minneapolis, Graham Merz of Minneapolis, Ben Merz of Waterloo and Matt Merz of Waterloo; his great grandchildren, Autumn, Haley, Abby Bloomquist, Kaydin and Chloe Berry; his sisters, Jeanette Hammes of Sigourney, Burnita Besser of Lakewood, Marlene Hammes of Delta, Rose Mary Shannon (Pat) of Sigourney and Danita Pergeau of Peoria, Illinois; and his brother-in-law Gary McFarlan (Barb) of Altoona. He is also survived by 24 nieces and nephews.
