He was predeceased by: his parents, Richard Klitgaard and Mary Klitgaard (Petersen); and his sister Barb Schwery. He is survived by: his daughter Ellen Elizabeth (J. W.) of St. Louis, MO; his son-in-law J. W. Whitehorn; his granddaughter Esther Rose; his wife Laurel of Harlan, IA; his son Andrew "Jack" of Harlan, IA; his granddaughter Esther Whitehorn; his siblings, Steve Klitgaard (Carolue) of Pocatello, ID and Jane Buck (Larry) of Lime Springs, Iowa; his siblings-in-law, Joel Schwery of Lenexa, KS, Nick Gambs (Jane) of Dunlap, IA and Barbara Light (Terry) of Hawthorne, CA; and his parents-in-law, Ed and Eleanor Gambs of Logan, IA. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other family members, and many friends.
Dr. Klitgaard served as President and Board Chair of the Iowa Academy of Family Physicians (IAFP), President of the IAFP Foundation, and as a member of the AMA Committee of Innovators.
