He was predeceased by: his parents, George Schuchmann and Mae Schuchmann (Streicher); and his brother Dr. George F. Schuchmann. He is survived by: his wife Mary Jo Helscher of Cedar Rapids; his children, Sarah Patterson (Jeff Versteegh) of Newton, Iowa and Joel Schuchmann (Michelle) of Jacksonville Beach, Florida; his grandson Peyton Patterson of Ankeny; his stepgranddaughter Cassidy Sayers (William) of Austin; his sister-in-law Martha Schuchmann of Knoxville, Tennessee; and also Josie. He is also survived by six nephews and nieces.
Even in the advanced stage of Alzheimer's, he talked randomly about ways to "do things better.".
