He is survived by: his former wife Nellie Elizabeth Burr; his wife Beth Johnston of Grinnell; and his children, Cheryl Hanssen (Steve) of Grinnell, Cindy Kidrowski of Grinnell and Michael Johnston (Leesa) of Thor, Iowa. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great grandchildren; and several foster children.
