He was predeceased by: his parents, Michael Schmitz and Anna Kettman Schmitz; his wife Blanche Schares; his sons, Leland, Dean and Roy; his grandson Joshua Schmitz; and his siblings, Gertrude Schares, Mildred Frost, Marcella Schmitz, Roman, Michael and Harold Schmitz.
He is survived by: his children, Judy Schmitz of Cedar Falls, Jane Brokel (Dave) of Riverside, Sue Chizek (Jim) of Cedar Falls, Debra Schmitz of Cedar Falls, Jerry (Brian) of Muscatine and John (Wendy) of Nevada; his grandchildren, Brian Brokel of Waterloo, Karen Schmitz of Denver, Dustin Brokel (Heather) of Rockford, Nicholas Schmitz of San Diego, Calif, Beth Nordin (Brad) of Lakeville, Minn, Melissa Schmitz of Austin, Katie Schmitz, Ariz, Matt Chizek of Waterloo, Megan Chizek of New York City, Sarah of Nevada, Luke of Nevada and Joe Schmitz of Nevada; his great grandchildren, Kylie and Ryan Brokel of Rockford; his sister Edna LaFlamme (Claude) of Waterloo; his daughters-in-law, Evie Schmitz of Bailey, Rose Schmitz of Houston and Cheryl Steffen of Dunkerton; and his sisters-in-law, Florence Dittmer, Agnes Schnelle (Hank), Rosalea Schmelzer (Al) and Arlene Schares. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.
