He was predeceased by: his parents, William O'Brien and Kathleen O'Brien (Thines); his wife Mary Kreimeyer; his siblings, Kathleen and Colonel Maurice O'Brien; his brother-in-law Gene Cole; his uncle Monsignor Roger O'Brien; his aunts, Mary Dugan and Eleanor Gray; his parents-in-law, Charles and Sylvia Kreimeyer; and his brother-in-law Randy Kreimeyer.

He is survived by: his daughters, Kelly O'Brien of Maplewood, MN and Jill Acevedo (Rudy) of San Antonio, TX; his grandchildren, Joshua, Evie and Nora; his sons, John O'Brien of Ames and Matthew O'Brien of Geneva; his sister Mary Pat Cole of Apple Valley, MN; his nephew Tom Gilles (Laurie); his sister-in-law Marianne O'Brien; his nieces, Micki O'Brien and Danielle Burton (Fred); his sister-in-law Charleen Richtsmeier (Robert) of Ackley; his nieces, Renee Evans and Dawn Jones-Erdman (Bob); his nephew Aaron Jones (Anne); his sister-in-law Kathy Nolte (William) of Dumont; and his nieces and nephews, Angela Nolte, Henry Nolte, Abby Wise and Katelyn Hemphill (Carson). He is also survived by many cousins, great nieces and nephews, and friends.
