He is survived by: his former wife Janet Nielsen; his friends, Jimmy Buffet and San Francisco; his children, Matt Townsend of Garner, Raechelle Gruis (Brendon) of Cedar Falls and Chris Townsend of Woden; his grandchildren, Alexandra Townsend, Cedric and Cora Gruis; his brother Joe Townsend (Karen) of Garner; and his uncles, Al Formanek (Pat) of Garner and Lewis Formanek (Mary Ann) of Phoenix, AZ.
