He was predeceased by: his father Leon Berns; and his sister DeAnne Thornton. He is survived by: his mother Phyllis Berns (Junk); his children, Anna (Umar Chohan), Levi (Kendra Paus) and Sophia; his siblings, Charles Berns (Heidi), Tom Berns (June), Julie Jordahl (Jon), Beth Young (Stephen), Barbara Berns (Joe Leone), Rita Koth (Chet) and Nancy Neeley (Scott); and his brother-in-law Mike Thornton. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and countless friends.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be made in John's memory to St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Garnavillo or local EMS services.
