He is survived by: his wife Betty Cowles; his son Jon Cowles of Fort Madison; his daughter-in-law Teri Cowles of St. Joseph, Missouri; his siblings, Hilbert "Gil" Cowles Jr. (Dotty) of Fort Madison, Darlene Kraus of Iowa City, Iowa and Nancy Hobbs (Jack) of Iowa City, Iowa; his grandsons, Logan Cowles and Matthew Cowles (Melissa); and his great grandchildren, Emma, Atticus and Caden. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A memorial has been established for the Denmark Fire and Rescue or PAW Animal Shelter.
