He was predeceased by: his sisters, Beulah "Bobby" Lieberknecht, Dorothy Alcorn, Mary Smith and Fern Dzuris; and his parents, John Smith and Zola Smith (DeMoss).

He is survived by: his children, Tami Anderson (Marc McCulloch) of Fort Dodge and Doug Smith (Heather) of Fort Dodge; his grandchildren, McKenzie, Ty, Zach, Erika and Valerie; and his former wife Doris "Dori" Groves. He is also survived by three great grandchildren.
