He was predeceased by: his parents, Charles H. Fortney and Janice Fortney (Newman); his former wife Thelma Fortney; and his brother Don Fortney. He is survived by: his wife Cathi Fortney of Fort Dodge; his daughters, Charlene Peterson (Jeff) and Leanne Hurdel (Tom); his stepsons, Bill Moretz and Brad Moretz (Keri); his grandchildren, Emily Peterson-Hagenstad (Erik), Danielle Peterson, Erin Henriquez (Tito), Alexandra McCormick (Ben), Willie Moretz, Mollie Moretz, Madison Wellik (Matt) and Braxton Moretz; and his great grandchildren, Ariana, Emilia, Harper and Zaelah.
