He was predeceased by: his parents, Gustav Herman and Rose Solbrack Herman; his wife Virginia M. Stedman; his son Tom Herman; and his granddaughter Melissa Herman.

He is survived by: his sons, David Herman (Wendy) of Pocahontas and Dennis Herman of Waterloo; and his stepsons, Allen Schroeder (Gina) of Waverly and Gary Schroeder (Susan) of Grundy Center. He is also survived by 7 grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
