He was predeceased by: his parents, P. D. Schichtl and Irene Schichtl (Ramus); and his wife Betty. He is survived by: his children, Vicki Garrelts (Mark) and Jeff Schichtl (Sheila) of Estherville; his grandchildren, Justin Garrelts, Spenser Schichtl (Brittany) and Morgan Umthun (Andy); and his great grandchildren, Jaxyn, Leah, Luke, Charlotte Schichtl, Emmett and Graham Umthun.

In lieu of flowers memorials are preferred to Estherville VFW, Estherville Lutheran Church, or Avera Hospice.
