She was predeceased by: her parents, Irvin Potts and Anna Potts (Kiernan); her husband Emmett; her son Larry McDermott; her daughter-in-law Sharon McDermott; and her siblings, Mary LaVon Brown (Mark), Gerald Potts, Cyril Potts and Warren "Buddy" Potts (Shirley).

She is survived by: her children, Cherie McDermott of Epworth, Terry McDermott (Kathy) of Peosta, Tim McDermott (Lori) of Bernard, Tom McDermott (Stephanie) of Cascade, Todd McDermott (Dana) of Bernard and Trace McDermott (Karen) of Marion; her brother Gene Potts (Jean) of Asbury; and her sisters-in-law, Kay Potts and Virginia Potts. She is also survived by 16 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers a Dorothy C. McDermott memorial fund has been established.
