He is survived by: his wife LuAnn M. Nelson of Emmetsburg, Iowa; his children, Joseph O'Brien (Nicole Newlon) of Madrid, Jason O'Brien (Susan Kenyon) of Ames, Janell Wanderscheid (Nicholas) of Madrid and Jeffrey O'Brien (Emily Horan) of Huxley, Iowa; and his siblings, Jim O'Brien of Des Moines, Mike O'Brien (Gayle), Therese Elsbecker of Zionsville and Joan O'Brien. He is also survived by nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
