He was predeceased by: his parents, John Flaherty and Mildred Flaherty (Nibaur); his fathers-in-law, Fred and Joey Gardner; his sisters, Dorothy Poshusta (Mike) and Lorraine (Ed Polansky); and his siblings-in-law, Janet Flaherty and Roger Lepa.

He is survived by: his spouse Kay Gardner; his children, Jerry Flaherty (Kimbery Dalluge Barlow) of Mason City, IA, Jeff Flaherty of Mason City, IA, Jon Flaherty (Cyndy) of Kansas City, MO, Jodi Fisher (Steve) of St. Mary's, IA and Joei Heinzerling (Shad) of Mason City, IA; his grandchildren, Jordan (Tanner Flaherty), Tyler (Mackenzie Flaherty), Kaylyn, Jenna, Sydney Fisher and Avery (Isabel Heinzerling); his siblings, Catherine Hageman (Ron) of Calmar, IA and Bob Flaherty of Lourdes, IA; and his siblings-in-law, Larry (Beth), Pat Lepa of Lime Springs, IA and Dan Gardner (Diane) of Elma, IA. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.

Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, a funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held at 12:00 PM on Friday, May 1, 2020 Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church with Father Jerry Kopacek celebrating the Mass.
