He was predeceased by: his parents, Glenn E. Shales Sr. and Lena Shales; his wife Joan Schultz Shales; and his brother Russell Shales. He is survived by: his children, Steve Shales (Sara) of Elgin, Lori Zabran (Mike) of Elgin and Troy Shales (Lori) of Elgin; his grandchildren, Tiffany (Colin), Caitlyn, Kirstie and Madison; and his siblings, Gloria Ragoni, Norma Shales, Vicki Fiebig (Horst), Walter Shales, Monroe "Butch" Shales and Gary Shales.
