He was predeceased by: his father Samuel Kool; and his daughter Denise. He is survived by: his mother Alice Kool (VanZante) of Eddyville; his wife Betty Kool of Albia; his children, Brian Kool (Kristin) of Eddyville and Lori Kool of Des Moines; his grandchildren, Bentley and Mackenzie Kool; his brothers, Ron Kool and Steve Kool (Cathy); and his nephew Adam Kool (Casey). He is also survived by nieces, nephews, and small children.
