He was predeceased by: his parents, Harry Schlapkohl and Wilma Schlapkohl (Bockwoldt); his wife Lois M. Paulsen; and his siblings, Ima Riessen, Norene Boyle, Roland Schlapkohl and Donald Schlapkohl.

He is survived by: his children, Susan Burger of Malibu, Sharon Dannenbring (Ron) of Sioux Falls, Karen Kummerfeldt (John) of Durant, Iowa and Keith Schlapkohl (Linda) of Stockton, Iowa. He is also survived by six grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.
