He was predeceased by: his grandfather Leo Hilbert; and his father-in-law Larry Lee Curry. He is survived by: his uncle Ernie Hilbert; his significant other Julia; his daughters, Mikayla Paige Stewart, McKenzie Criseyde Hilbert (Andrew Stanbro) and Cheyann Marie Hilbert; his granddaughter Baby Girl Stanbro; his parent Marla Rae Hilbert; his mother-in-law Joanne Carol Curry; his grandmother Marcella Hilbert; his adoptive parents, Ernie Hilbert and Kathy Hilbert; and also Kathy.
On December 10, 2021, James fell ill and by December 16th he was hospitalized with severe Covid pneumonia, where he spent the remainder of his days on a ventilator in the intensive care unit.
