He is survived by: his wife Sarah Tauke; his daughters, Amy Jin Schmelzer of Dubuque and Angie Steffen (Jason) of Cedar Falls; his grandchildren, Parker and Mason Steffen of Cedar Falls; his siblings, Mary Schmelzer of Iowa City, Mike Schmelzer (Sharon) of Garnavillo, Tom Schmelzer (Diane) of Edgewood, Tim Schmelzer (Kathy) of Elkader, Margaret Matt (Bruce) of Lone Tree, Susan Schmelzer of Garnavillo, Anna Elder (Dave) of Iowa City, Donna Franks (Kurt) of Postville, Ellen Claeys (Joe) of Iowa City and Laurie Orth (Jim) of Lewiston, MN.; and his sisters-in-law, Nancy Schmelzer of Elkader and Lois Tauke of Cascade.
Visitation was held on Thursday, January 30th 2025 from 3:00 PM to 6:00 PM and on Friday, January 31st 2025 from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM. A Mass of Christian burial was held on Friday, January 31st 2025 at 10:30 AM at the Church of the Resurrection (4300 Asbury Rd, Dubuque, IA 52002). A burial was held on Friday, January 31st 2025 at the Resurrection Cemetery.
The family requests no flowers. Memorials may be directed to Church of the Resurrection, Veterans Freedom Center, and Hospice of Dubuque.
