He was predeceased by: his parents, Emil Bechen and Edna Bechen (Franz); his son-in-law James R. Wahlert; and his brothers, Eugene, Donald, Robert and Raymond.
He is survived by: his wife Ellyn J. Genz; his children, Connie Leuschner (Art), Susan Wahlert, Melissa Jensen (John Sr.), Joseph Bechen Jr. (Tammy) and Jennifer Bahl (Roger); his grandchildren, Victoria Maas, Sarah Dress, Christopher Wahlert, James A. Wahlert, Daniel Wahlert, Nicholas Wahlert, John Jensen Jr., Kristin Beermann, Erica Jensen, Brian Jensen, Jesse Bahl, Rebecca Vasquez and Josephine Bahl; and his brother Edward Bechen. He is also survived by 27 great-grandchildren; six great-great-grandchildren.
A memorial has been established for Dubuque Regional Humane Society.
