He was predeceased by: his grandparents, Ruth and Paul Gillespie; and his aunts, MaryAnn Vogt and Sharon Gillespie. He is survived by: his parents, David Bartels of Dubuque and Elizabeth Bartels (Gillespie) of Dubuque; his wife Erica Bartels of Dubuque; his sons, Cody Bartels of Dubuque and Casey Bartels of Dubuque; his mother-in-law Becky Johnson of Cascade, IA; his brother Chris Simpson (Cari); and his siblings-in-law, Billy Johnson, Tracy Johnson, Jamie Johnson (Jenny) and Joni Johnson. He is also survived by many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, the family requests memorials be given to the ALS Association.
